FREE FIREWOOD - NATIONWIDE COVERAGE
Helping Recycle Tree Surgery Waste
What’s the catch? Only one….the firewood you receive will not be processed into cut and split firewood ready to throw in your fireplace, therefore it will require some work on your part. The free firewood will come in all shapes and sizes and will need processing by yourself into useable log sized firewood. If you have access to a chainsaw and axe, or other means of processing the free firewood yourself, then read on.
How Can I Get Free Firewood?
Every day, thousands of Arborists (tree surgeons) are busy at work throughout the country, felling trees or pruning them. The result of this is endless amounts of waste that has to be dealt with. In many cases, companies keep the waste themselves for processing into a saleable product, or even transferring to an alternative site for processing into a valuable biomass product.
However, not all arborists have access to adequate free tip sites, particularly when working outside of their local areas. This could often mean an hour-long drive in the middle of the working day in order to off-load their full trucks, thus allowing them to complete their job.
The Arbtalk tip site directory helps solve this problem by giving tree surgeons a database of tip sites all over the UK to use for tipping their waste timber at no cost to themselves. The final result, free firewood for you.

What Can I Expect in my Load of Free Firewood?
Type of Wood
In short, anything and everything. You should expect a mixture of softwood and hardwood, or just one of the above. Some woods do burn better than others, but the bottom line is any free firewood is good firewood. Ultimately it’s all about the seasoning of the timber prior to burning. And of course, if burning an exceptional quantity of softwood or resinous timber, be sure to have your chimney swept more regularly.
Quantity, Shape, and Size
The typical tree surgeon truck is usually a 3.5t transit or similar. Depending on how ambitiously it has been loaded you could expect a quantity of approximately 4-6 cubic meters. Some tree surgeons may have larger vehicles or even grab lorries. Be sure to discuss this if you are contacted and make sure you have adequate space and access prior to your delivery.
Timber will be in all shapes and sizes. In the case of a transit tipper sized delivery, it should mostly be in liftable pieces. For those with larger vehicles, the firewood may be significantly larger. Once again, ensure you know you have the means to deal with the free firewood you will be receiving prior to accepting delivery.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
A tree surgeon in York contacted me and asked if I wanted any large logs. Took delivery of these – upgraded my fire circle seating. Very grateful.
Ive had about 10 ton of softwood delivered and enough chip to top up all the fishing swims and paths.
As a new tip site for Arbtalk, we are really pleased with our first delivery of logs, which we have used for firewood and for making various items as part of our forest school training (including rustic seats, milking stools and a variety of small items) Our next delivery arrives tomorrow- we look forward to seeing what uses we can put it to! The company who delivered to us the first time were great- friendly, polite and positive- we hope to work with them again in future. A great idea which we’re pleased to be part of- I’ve recommended it to all of my students!
Received a phone call stating they had seen my details on the Arbtalk website and would I be interested in a large amount of willow. The chaps were very friendly and helpful and delivered several loads, amounting to approximately 15 tons, from a local job they were on. Incredibly helpful to get all this free wood when it’s our only source of heat through the winter. Fantastic website to be a part of.
We received lots of free wood chips and logs all from this site which we have used on our woodland paths to make it much safer for our children.
Massive thank you as without this we wouldn’t have any.
